MATRIZ

MATRIZ brings together several meanings of the word matrix: womb, origin, source and the generation of something new. The work combines conventional and inverted Arraiolos stitches with an exploration of colour, while moving the textile technique onto a fixed stainless-steel structure. The contrast between the flexibility of embroidery and the rigid, almost robotic support expands the material and spatial possibilities of Arraiolos tapestry. The work also employs the outline stitch associated with the earliest Arraiolos tapestries of the 16th century.
