INTERVIEW WITH SUSANA CEREJA
About
In a long-form interview with Daniel Lichterwaldt for Les Nouveaux Riches, Susana Cereja reflects on childhood, family, architecture and the formation of her artistic practice. She discusses the continued influence of architectural thinking on scale, technical drawing and production, as well as her decision in 2015 to investigate the Arraiolos stitch as a contemporary artistic medium.
The interview also moves through community-based projects in Torrão and Coruche, material experimentation, the role of Portuguese wool and works including HELIA, RÊVERIE and HIDE & SEEK. It offers a broad view of a practice built through the meeting of traditional knowledge, technical experimentation, collective processes and contemporary visual language.
